Margaret Virginia Funk (also known as Virg) was born in Winfield, Kansas, USA, to John D. Funk and Bessie Pruitt Funk on May 6, 1924.  Virginia grew up as the youngest of nine children – six brothers and two sisters.  

Virginia grew up during the depression and times were tough.  Her parents divorced when she was five years old.  Her older brother, Roy took care of her and her brother Joe while their mother was at work.

When Virginia was in grade 12, World War II was occurring.   She had to go to school on Saturdays so the boys in her class could graduate early to go to war.  When Virginia graduated, she got a job wrapping butter at the local dairy.

Her father lived in Wichita, Kansas, USA, so he asked Virg to move up to keep house for him.  She did and got a job at the Boeing plant in the parts department.  During that time, Virginia drove her father up to Canada and was with him when he purchased property at Turtle Lake.  After the property was purchased, they would drive up several times a summer to fish, play cards and enjoy family.

On August 11, 1957, Virginia married Wilbert Wyssman from Covington, Oklahoma, USA.  Virginia and Wilbert had their honeymoon at the Turtle Lake property.

On October 28, 1960, Virginia and Wilbert had a daughter, Karen.  They were living in Wichita; Wilbert was a contract hauler for the local newspaper and owned a gas station as well.  Virginia stayed home and was the accountant for Wilbert.  

In 1986, Karen married Wayne Olson and moved to La Ronge, Saskatchewan.  In 1991, Virginia & Wilbert were blessed with a grandson, Joshua followed a couple years later in 1993 by a beautiful granddaughter, Margaret.  Virginia’s husband, Wilbert, passed away in 2009 (after 52 years of marriage). 

In 2013, at the age of 89, Virginia sold her Wichita house and moved to La Ronge, Saskatchewan to be close to Karen and her family.  Virginia made many friends in La Ronge and often hosted card games at her duplex. 

Virginia lived on her own until 2017 when she moved to the Lodge in St. Walburg.  She lived there 4 years before her death on October 6, 2021 at the age of 97 years old.
