It is with sadness that as the family of Syd, we announce his sudden passing on Friday January 7th, 2022, at the age of 96 years. He was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Grace; his brothers Art and Roy; his sister Doris; his nephews Alan and Don.
Left to cherish his memory are his sister Joyce: his nieces Marilyn, Janice, Alison, Lynn, Wanda, Karen, Kathy, and Yvonne; his nephews Wayne and Brian, their families including those of Alan (Pat) and Don (Sandy) as well as neighbors and friends.
On September 5th, 1925, Syd was born in Maidstone, where he lived most of his life and where he obtained his elementary school education until WW2 interrupted his education after grade 8. Syd then assisted his dad on the farm and when the war ended, he spent the next 6 years on Vancouver Island once his parents had retired to Victoria. He took correspondence, attended night school, got his tin smithing certification, and went on to work in sawmills, furnace installation and then to work on the construction of the Hart Highway. It was when a massive snow fall closed the construction camp that he made the decision to return to Maidstone and resumed farming.
Syd purchased his first ½ section of farmland in 1955, the second ½ section purchased in 1959 and it was at this time that he established his own home, out buildings and corrals with the initial purchase of 6 heifers. Work included gardens, windbreaks and the creation of the lovely acreage setting he called home.
Syd enjoyed family, reading and music both particularly of country and western themes, his harmonica, sports live and on TV- especially hockey and baseball, the Maidstone Jets, road trips and country drives. His favorite treats were ice cream, mincemeat tarts, humbugs, lemon, or chocolate cake or a poached egg. A quiet, soft spoken and humble man, he will be missed.
A small private family service was held on Saturday January 29th to celebrate a life well- loved and well lived. The service is available on the Facebook page of Marshalls Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Island Suites or the Recreation program of the Pine Island Lodge, Maidstone SK.
