Muriel was born in Conquest, Saskatchewan on December 30, 1928. She was the oldest of eight children of Ronald (Mick) and Mary Munton.
She took her first six years of school in Sanctuary, in a two room brick school. The following four years were done in Porter School near Landis. Then she finished grade 11 and 12 in Handel.
For her first job she made $30 for the month by gardening, milking and doing other general chores.
In June 1949, Muriel married Hughbert Hakes (whom most people called Hebe). They were
married almost 22 years and had nine children when he passed away due to a brain aneurysm.
In November 1971, she married Alcide Masson. They decided to sell the farm because of his health.
They bought a house in Makwa and both worked out for a few years. In April 1987, they bought the Makwa hotel and ran it for 11 years.
Muriel was predeceased by two husbands, two of her children (David and Thelma), both of her
parents, both of her brothers, and two of her sisters.
