Mary Minstus Sahkitamo (Ben) was born at Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation to Mary Oatches and John Sahkitamo (Ben), and was the youngest amongst her 3 sisters, 1 brother, and 3 adopted brothers. Mary was a hard working mother who had some hardships which made her wheelchair bound later in life. Mary had a very good humor and loved to visit, converse with friends and family. Her favorite games were bingo and cards. Mary loved her children and was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always concerned about their wellbeing and care . Mary was a very cultural person and followed her culture by offering print and adhering to ceremonies at all times. Messages from her kids; nikawe nikiskina-hamak, kohkawenow kamamseyin, kahkeyow asinew kasakehecik nehiyawewin ekwa isehcikewin yekawehkac kawanehtiyin mena kahkamemoweyin (Audrey), she was a mother to all that knew her (Calvin), I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her (Perry), we will miss you mom (Grant), mom lead a hard life but she kept moving forward no matter what was put in front of her (Dean), everyone loved her, outgoing, she had a sense of humor, very giving and a storyteller (Deanna), love you very much, mom (Jerry), the strongest woman we’ve had with a heart of gold, we will never forget your silliness, love you and you did a beautiful job raising us (Bernice).
Mary is survived by: her children, Audrey, Calvin, Grant, Perry, Dean, Deanna, Jerry Jr. and Bernice (Joey); her grandson, Justice(who she helped raise); and other numerous grandkids and great grandkids.
Mary was predeceased by: her husband, Jerry Ross (2019); her sisters, Isabelle (2011), Edna Ben Sr. (2009) and Madeline (1977); her nieces, Edna, Flora, Alice, Josephine,and Joanne; her nephews, Wilfred, Simon, William, Kenneth, Matthew, and Brian; and her grandnieces and grandnephews.
