Frida was born to John and Christine (Smereczanski) Mattern on July 15, 1938 at the family homestead in the White Eagle district. She was their first born followed by a sister, Agnes and a brother, Jack.
She grew up on their family farm, learning to care for animals and helping her father in the fields with seeding and harvesting. Being outdoors was a passion that she carried throughout all her life. Farming was her life. She was an avid gardener, always growing more than she could use and giving away extra vegetables. She was proud she was able to milk cows by hand for 50 years. The cream was then shipped to help support the family. She enjoyed visiting when family and friends stopped in. She loved everyone dearly especially her grandchildren. They each had a special place in her heart. She was a wonderful person with a gentle spirit, truly loving and caring for every living thing. She really was GRAMMA to everyone.
She married John Hoffman on November 5, 1962 and they enjoyed 52 years together until his passing in 2014. In November 1963, they welcomed their first daughter, Marie and a year later in December 1964 they welcomed another daughter Lynda. Their family was now complete. She was very excited for grandchildren and cherished every time she saw them. Watching them grow to adults and succeed in life made her very proud. She passed away peacefully in the Maidstone Health Complex on March 24, 2022 after a short battle with cancer.
She was predeceased by: her loving husband, John Hoffman (2014); her mother, Christine Mattern (1962): father, John Mattern (1987); mother-in-law Anna (1969); father-in- law, John Hoffman Sr (1982); sister-in-laws, Mary Oberhofer (2004) & Rose Bodnarchuk (2012); brothers-in-law, Alex Bodnarchuk (1994) & Frank Oberhofer (2017); nephew; Michael Bodnarchuk (1989); niece, Rita Parenteau (2004).
