Colleen Hardes of Paradise Hill passed away peacefully in Turtleford Hospital on December 4, 2022 at the age of 94. Colleen was born in Saskatoon and grew up in Frenchman Butte. She attended Teachers’ College and taught school in Barthel and River Junction. She married Louis Hardes in 1950 and raised three sons on the Hardes homestead north of Paradise Hill. Colleen enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking, gardening, and preserving food, all without the conveniences that we enjoy today. She was from the generation of home makers who worked hard at providing for her family. She loved her family and friends, often gathering with people for Sunday suppers and holidays. Colleen loved learning, reading, playing cards, doing puzzles, baseball, curling, and of course, was the queen of Scrabble. Colleen and Louis spent many winters in Arizona enjoying new friends and sunshine. After Louis’s passing, Colleen moved into Paradise Hill and later lived in the care home.
Colleen had a special relationship with each of her boys, their wives, and each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took the time to get to know what their interests were and kept up on all their news. She made it her mission to crochet an afghan for each of them. Colleen had a wide circle of friends and relatives she kept in touch with via letters, phone calls, and later Facebook.
Colleen is survived by: her three sons, Brian (Laurie), David (Judy), and Miles (Dawn); her grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Edwin, Glen, Paul, Ken and Curtis; Caitlin, Jacob and Taryn; Colt and Lacie; and her twenty great-grandchildren.
Colleen was predeceased by: her husband, Louis in 2000; and her brother, Roger Jarvis in 2022.
There will be a family celebration of life and burial for Colleen in the spring of 2023.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Paradise Hill Care Home.
