Roger was the youngest child of Rene and Marie Duquette. He was born in 1935 one mile north of Paradise Hill at Mrs. Olsen’s house. He had seven siblings. When Roger was 5, the family moved from Paradise Hill to the small settlement of Timberlost, 20 miles SE of Big River. Here, the family ran a sawmill, cleared land, trapped and it’s where Roger attended school. In 1954, at the age of 19, Roger and his family moved back to Paradise Hill to farm with his Uncle Louis. Roger eventually purchased the farm in 1967 at the age of 32. While he farmed, he took the opportunity to work seismic. In 1978, he married Marguerite Greves (Simpson) and became a stepfather to her children, Calvin, Debra, and Linda. Together, he and Marg continued to farm and raise cattle. Eventually Roger rented the farm to Marvin Thompson and took to working as a farmhand for Marvin. He also found work with Leo Veller building the Paradise Hill School. Over the years, Roger and Marg had a continuing parade of motorhomes and pets including dogs, Toby, Spice and Zoey. Together, Marg and Roger toured far and wide in their motorhomes taking in many chuckwagon races and destinations throughout western Canada. In Marg’s later years, Roger served as a loving caregiver to her. Following Marg’s death in 2015, Roger was on a mission to satiate his own travel-lust. Over the next three years, he was in every province in Canada except Manitoba! And capped off his trips in 2018 with a train trip from Edmonton to Prince Rupert.
Over his lifetime, Roger developed a huge fan club of people who loved him through and through. He was kind, fun-loving, and relentlessly positive. He was an understated hero, never a complainer, a tirelessly loyal companion to Marg and her pup, Zoey, the world’s best step-father and grandfather, a committed community person, and a friend to anyone he met.
Roger leaves to mourn: his step-daughters, Debra Harbin and Linda Boyd; his granddaughter, Cassandra Harbin; his sister, Nelida (dec. Norman) Clarke; his brothers, Leo (Geraldine) Duquette, Ore (Helen) Duquette; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
