Bernard Joseph Schmitz passed away on July 19, 2019 in Edmonton. He was born August 23, 1953 in Saskatoon, and came to his parent's home in Meadow Lake a few months later. Bernie grew up working with his father in the electrical business and on the farm at St. Walburg. He learned from his dad to pay attention to detail and to share his knowledge and passions with others. After completing his electrical apprenticeship, Bernie married Margaret Spencer settling in St. Walburg to raise their children, Jennifer and Geoffrey. For many years Bernie worked in the oilfield during the day and at their dry cleaning business in the evenings and weekends. After meeting Bonnie in 1999 and losing both his parents, Bernie and Bonnie moved to the west coast where they were married in 2006. After 13 years on Vancouver Island, they returned home to the prairies. Bernie had a love for vehicles -motorcycles, sports cars, trucks (he never had a favourite style)– and took great pride in them, polishing even before a trip “to start off right”. Over the years, he travelled hundreds of thousands of miles touring Canada and the USA.
Bernie was predeceased by: his parents, Anne and Joe; his brother, Herb; and his father-in-law, Frank.
He is survived by: his wife, Bonnie; his children, Jennifer and Geoff; his step-children, Stephanie (Bret), Vance, and Amanda (Tony); his grandchildren, Kaylynn, Greyson, Logan, Wade and Lexi; his brother, Marty (Laurie); his sister, Helen (Jim) Stabbler; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Bernie will be greatly missed by family & friends.
